The umbilical cord will usually dry and fall off within 2-4 weeks. Apply alcohol daily directly to the umbilical cord in order to avoid irritation to surrounding skin. Slight bleeding is often noted immediately before and after the cord falls off. Any foul-smelling discharge or redness extending more than 1/4 inch from the edge should be evaluated by a physician.
